It usually starts around November and runs through April. Twice a week (Usually on a Tuesday and Wednesday), a volunteer spends around an hour observing and recording the types and numbers of birds seen at the feeders at Wargo Nature Center. Currently we have about 4 volunteers doing this and we work out a schedule based on volunteer availability. We are always happy to have new volunteers start at any time and will provide training. It is generally pretty relaxing. Blue Bird Box Monitoring: Wargo also sponsors a Blue Bird Trail. It is located at Lino Lakes City Hall, right off of Highway 35. The program starts in the Spring and runs through early Fall. There are about 10 boxes. Monitoring is done once a week. People sign up for the weeks that work for them. It involves walking (or bike riding on trails) to the area of the boxes. Boxes are then checked for nesting birds and recorded. Note that there is a fair amount of walking with this project. This past year we had Baby Blue Birds! Contact Person for these Opportunities: Lisa Gilliland Program Supervisor Wargo Nature Center Work 763-324-3447 Cell 612-505-1870 There are also a number of one day events throughout the year at Wargo - Snow Days, Maple Syruping Day, Earth Day, Little Goblins Event, that are always looking for volunteers. Also, volunteers are needed who can help to maintain our various native gardens and one small veggie garden. Website Address: We have a unique website address, however rather than typing it in every time just type in "North Metro Master Naturalists" into your browser and it will pop right up. The address was fashioned after the West Metro Chapter, so that if all the web page addresses were eventually standardized, this would be the likely format. We suggest you bookmark the page so you can find it easily when you want to look something up. |
